How do I find my EIN number is a matter of concern for the new business entrepreneurs. The Employer Identification Number (EIN), also referred to as the Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN) or the Federal Tax Identification Number, is a unique nine-digit number issued to business organizations operating in the United States for identification purposes by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). It is usually referred to as a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) when the number is used for identification rather than employment tax reporting, and is usually referred to as an EIN when used for the purposes of reporting employment taxes. These numbers are used for tax administration purposes and must not be used for other purposes.

How Do I Find My EIN Number in the USA

Check Your Eligibility

If your main business is located in the United States or the U.S., you can apply for an EIN online.

A valid taxpayer identification number must be available to the individual for applying online (SSN, ITIN, EIN).

You are restricted to per responsible party. The ‘responsible party’ is the person who ultimately owns or governs the entity or who exercises the entity's ultimate effective power. The liable party must be a citizen (i.e., a natural person), not an agency, unless the applicant is a government entity.

Understand the Application Online

As you will not be able to save and return at a later time, you must complete this application in one session.

After 15 minutes of inactivity, your session will expire and you will need to start again.

Submit Your Application

After all validations are done, you will get your EIN immediately upon completion. You can then download, save, and print your EIN confirmation notice.

You may submit your online application following the link below…

Employer Tax Responsibilities

Publication 15 (PDF) offers details on employer tax obligations relating to taxable income, withholding of employment tax, and which tax returns are expected to be filed. In Publication 15-A (PDF), more complex topics are addressed and tax treatment of certain employee benefits can be found in Publication 15. We recommend that employers will download these IRS.gov publications. You can request copies online (search for 'Forms and Publications') or by calling 1-800-TAX-FORM.

Importance

If the responsible party is an individual with an EIN previously obtained through the Internet, your application can’t be processed online. To submit, please use one of the other methods. Refer to How to Apply for an EIN. Any inconvenience you may suffer from this should be considered under apologization.

Who Needs an EIN

Any organization that retains workers needs an EIN. However, whether they act as a company or association, non-employers are often expected to receive one.

Not sure if an EIN is necessary for you? Study this IRS guide. You need to apply for an EIN if you answer yes to any of the questions in the list.

If your company expands, for a full list of who wants an EIN, make sure to visit the IRS website and its services.

If you think your company qualifies for tax exempt status (whether or not you have a provision to apply for a formal ruling), make sure that before you apply for an EIN, your organization is legally established. Almost all organizations exempted under IRC 501(a) are subject to automatic revocation of their tax-exempt status if, for a period of three consecutive years for failing to file the necessary annual information return or note. We believe that you are legally established when you apply for an EIN and the clock starts ticking over this three-year cycle.
